Camera Club Talks & Judging
Practical photography talks and constructive competition judging with Darren Woolway ARPS AMPA Ba(Hons).
Looking for an evening that helps your members develop their photography?
Explore talks that explain the decisions, techniques and processes behind the images, or enquire about judging your next club competition.
Browse the talks below, view confirmed bookings and get in touch to discuss your club’s programme.
Competition Judging
A competition evening should give members something to take away and apply to their own photography.
My approach is to explain what makes an image work, recognise the photographer’s intention and offer constructive suggestions for improvement. Alongside technical execution, I consider composition, lighting, storytelling and the overall impact of the photograph.
The aim is to provide clear, encouraging feedback that helps photographers understand both their strengths and the opportunities to develop their work.
Judging Expenses
Travel expenses are calculated at £0.55 per mile for the full return journey from Minster-on-Sea, Kent.
Please include your club’s name, venue address, proposed date and competition format when enquiring. I’ll confirm availability and expenses before the booking is agreed.
Photography Talks for Camera Clubs
Discover how the photographs were made, why particular decisions mattered and how you can apply those ideas to your own work.
My talks combine photographs, behind-the-scenes explanations and practical teaching, with opportunities to ask questions throughout. Depending on the subject, the evening includes illustrated examples or live editing demonstrations.
Each talk is designed for a club evening of approximately 2–2.5 hours, including an interval and questions.

Behind the Lens: Extreme Motorsport Photography & Content Creation
ILLUSTRATED TALK WITH PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO & REELS
Covering a motorsport event means thinking beyond the individual photograph. Still images, video and reels work together to tell the story, with each format playing a different role across social media, websites and print.
Join me behind the scenes of Trophy Raid and Ultra4 racing across Europe as I share my work as a photographer and content creator. Through photographs, video footage and reels, I’ll explain how I approach capturing the action and balance the demands of producing different types of content during a fast-moving event.
We’ll explore the creative and practical decisions involved, from working in dust and mud to choosing when to shoot stills and when to capture movement. You’ll see how photography, video, social media, web and graphic design come together within my professional workflow.
What you’ll learn
-
Shooting for multiple platforms: how the intended use influences framing, orientation and the content you capture.
-
Balancing photography and video: how to approach producing still images, footage and reels within the same event.
-
Capturing action in unpredictable conditions: techniques and decisions for working with speed, difficult terrain and changing light.
-
Building a complete story: combining action, people, details and behind-the-scenes moments into content that gives audiences a feel for the event.
Whether you photograph motorsport or want to understand how video and reels can complement your own photography, this talk offers a practical insight into working across multiple formats.

My Journey: Finding Your Direction in Photography
ILLUSTRATED TALK
How do you move from enjoying photography to finding your own direction, developing confidence and creating work with purpose?
In this personal and honest talk, I’ll share how I got started, the experiences that shaped my photography and the steps that led me into working professionally. Along the way, we’ll explore the value of experimenting, seeking feedback and building relationships with people who challenge and encourage you.
This is a look at the learning behind the photographs, including the setbacks, changes of direction and lessons that helped me move forward. Whether you want to improve your images, explore a new subject or take your photography further, there will be ideas to apply to your own journey.
In the second half, I’ll share a selection of my later work, explaining the thinking behind the images, the creative decisions involved and how my approach has developed.
What you’ll take away
-
How to find a direction that reflects your interests and ambitions.
-
How to use feedback and setbacks to develop your photography.
-
Why experimenting with different subjects and approaches can help you grow.
-
How connections with other photographers can open up learning and opportunities.
You don’t need to want a career in photography to benefit. This evening is about deciding what you want from your photography and finding the confidence to pursue it.
